Former Seychelles President James Michel has sent a condolence message following the passing of ex-Botswana President, Festus Gontebanye Mogae.

Mr Michel’s message reads:

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of His Excellency Festus Gontebanye Mogae, former President of Botswana, a distinguished statesman, and a valued friend. Botswana, the African continent, and all who knew him have lost a leader of rare integrity, wisdom, and commitment to public service.

“As President of Botswana, he served his country with dignity and purpose, leaving behind a legacy of responsible leadership, democratic governance, and dedication to sustainable development. He was a leader who believed in inclusive societies, principled decision-making, and the enduring value of service to one’s nation.

“On a personal level, I remember him as a friend and colleague whose presence reflected humility, warmth, and deep respect for others. His passing is not only a national loss for Botswana, but also a personal loss to those who had the privilege of knowing him.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, the government and people of Botswana, and all who mourn his departure. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire generations to come.”

Botswana’s former President Festus Mogae died yesterday at the age of 86, said President Duma Boko.

"Today Botswana mourns a distinguished statesman and patriot whose life was devoted to the service of his country," President Boko announced, adding that Mr Mogae died early on Friday.

The former president had been in ill health for some time.

Mr Mogae led the southern African country for a decade and won praise for good governance and the fight against HIV/Aids. He was Botswana’s third president from 1998 to 2008, handing power ‌to Vice President Ian Khama in a smooth transition that highlighted Botswana’s reputation for political stability.
