Hon. Clarisse attending the session virtually
Vice-chairperson of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus of the National Assembly of Seychelles, Hon. Denise Clarisse, took part in the SADC Parliamentary Forum Regional Women’s Parliamentary Caucus virtual session yesterday.
The meeting, held ahead of the 59th Plenary Assembly, focused on the theme ‘Women Parliamentarians’ Leadership on Climate Change and the Blue Economy: An Ocean of Opportunity’. Proceedings began with updates on resolutions from the last Regional Women’s Parliamentary Caucus (RWPC) meeting, particularly regarding legal frameworks and regional commitments.
Members from across the region discussed women’s advocacy in financial decision-making, gender-responsive climate initiatives, and the importance of scrutinising climate policies to ensure inclusivity for vulnerable groups. Presentations highlighted the role of women in the blue economy, especially in food processing and skills development, while stressing the need for stronger parliamentary oversight and accountability.
A key outcome of the session was the election of new RWPC leadership, with Eswatini chosen as chair and Namibia as vice-chair.
Hon. Clarisse described the discussions as “enriching and inspiring”, noting that they reinforced the importance of women parliamentarians in shaping inclusive climate and blue economy policies.
She expressed hope to bring forward the insights gathered during the session within the Seychelles context.
