The end of physical PlayStation games: What Sony’s 2028 decision really means for Seychelles’ gamers

In Seychelles, the PlayStation has long reigned supreme. From the PS2 era that defined school holidays to the PS4 that introduced The Last of Us, The Witcher 3, and Grand Theft Auto V into countless living rooms, Sony’s console has dominated households across Mahé, Praslin, and the outer islands.

For years, the rhythm of gaming in the country remained distinctly physical: one waited patiently for the discs to arrive.

That wait was often punishing. New releases frequently reached Seychelles five to six months late, and sometimes even longer. One would hear friends overseas discussing the latest titles while staring at ‘Coming Soon’ labels in the handful of shops that imported games. Whether one subscribes to Intelvision, Cable & Wireless, Airtel, or the recently launched Starlink, reliable high-speed connections are no longer a luxury for a growing number of households. Day-one digital downloads have become realistic. On July 1, 2026, Sony made the position official – from January 2028, the company will cease production of new physical PlayStation game discs. All future releases will be digital only.

On the surface, this development appears to represent clear progress for gamers in Seychelles.
