Aquaculture department marks five years of research and innovation

The Aquaculture department yesterday celebrated its fifth anniversary with a Research Day at the Seychelles Maritime Academy, marking five years of scientific research, technical development and progress towards establishing a sustainable aquaculture sector in Seychelles.

The event brought together researchers, partners, students and stakeholders to reflect on the department’s achievements, share research findings and explore opportunities for the future development of aquaculture in the island nation.

Opening the event, Veronica Alphonse-Uzice welcomed participants and highlighted the critical role of research in building a strong foundation for the emerging sector.

“Although five years may seem like a short period, it has been a time of significant learning, experimentation, capacity building and growth,” she said.

She noted that developing aquaculture requires far more than infrastructure and equipment, stressing the importance of scientific research, technical expertise, collaboration, investment and persistence.

The Research Day featured presentations on the development of sea urchin, sea cucumber and finfish aquaculture, alongside scientific posters showcasing the department’s research activities and achievements.
