Dubai Expo 2020

Seychelles & Global Impact Network take centre stage

Seychelles and Global Impact Network was front and centre at the Dubai Expo 2020 on Saturday, February 5, 2022, in an event launching the sustainable-centred social platform in the island nation’s pavilion.

Crowning Seychelles once again as one of the pioneers of sustainability in its region, the event opened with an avant-garde ecological call out from the 90s, titled ‘Don’t Let Them Die’, by celebrated local artist, Joe Samy, in the presence of Ambassador Jean-Claude Adrienne, commissioner general and Seychelles ambassador in Abu Dhabi; Global Impact representative, Tatiana Sharpe; and a delegation from the Seychelles Pavilion including country manager, John Addo-Obiri; director, Maria Azemia; deputy commissioner, Galen Bresson; and staff members.

The Seychelles Team was joined by students from Dwight School Dubai, a school with a strong belief that sustainability is central to building a better future and committed to fostering the next generation of global leaders and ethical citizens. The school commits itself to a more sustainable lifestyle through the adoption of daily practices, and, through the Global Impact Network, aim to maximise student interest in such lifestyle.

Making their way through the Expo site, the delegation carried props from the Pavilion, representing various aspects of the archipelago’s grand biodiversity, such as the endemic coco de mer, giant tortoise, and the Seychelles National Flag.

Mrs Azemia, stated that ‘’Seychelles, being a small island developing state, would like to take a stance at the World Expo showcasing our commitment to creating greater and more positive efforts towards having a sustainable environment and we want everyone to know that every action counts”.

Although the Global Impact Network recently launched at the Dubai Expo 2020, it has been in partnership with the Seychelles Islands since June 4, 2021, through which the destination officially became the first country to create its online community page on the platform; inviting the local tourism industry and community to join the movement.
