English River school celebrates World Health Day

The science department of English River school celebrated World Health Day last week under the WHO's theme of the year ‘Health for All’.

Various activities were organised for all staff such as free health screening for diabetes, obesity, hypertension and eye check up by Dr Murthy's Medical and Gastro clinic.

Health workers from the Ministry of Health gave a special talk to students from S1 to S3 on body hygiene and to students from S4-S5 on substance abuse.

In addition to that Dr Alistair from the Ministry of Health was stationed at the school for further consultation and referral purposes.

The science department also organised a poem and poster competition over the week where students of different levels participated.

The day ended with prize giving for the competitions with the attendance of second secretary from the Indian high commission, Mr Biswas and Amarapali Rao, the school’s head teacher Steve Hoareau, deputy head Maryanne Payet, head of the science department Paul Omondi and staff.

For the poster competition the winners are Emannuel Musunga, Reshan Wikramarachige and Thea Allisop.

For the poem competition the winners are Grace Clothilde, Julio and Sivasangaran Pillay.

Mr Biswas congratulated the students for participating in the event and the teachers for organising such activities to promote healthy lifestyle.

Mr Hoareau commended the science department and thanked the high commission of India for playing an integral role in the field of health in Seychelles. He also thanked them for sponsoring gifts for the winners every year and he also thanked Dr Murthy's clinic and staff from the Ministry of Health for conducting free health screenings and talks.
