PUC satisfied with progress made on La Digue sewerage project

Larry Leste, project engineer at PUC

One year into the project to construct a centralised sewerage system for La Digue, works are progressing satisfactorily.

The project comprises two main components: the installation of a sewer collection system along the western coast of La Digue and the construction of a sewage treatment plant at L’Union Estate.

The first component of works, the sewer collection system, was divided into two lots and awarded to Earth Development and Ascent projects respectively. According to PUC’s project engineer, Larry Leste, they are well under way and both are at 52 percent completion.

He added that within the next two months Earth Development endeavours to complete outstanding pipe laying works, from La Passe to La Digue Supermarket while Ascent Project aims to complete pending works from Helipad to Mutu shop.

Running parallel with ongoing pipeline installation, will soon be the construction of lifting and pumping stations.

PUC recently launched the tender process for the supply of pre-fabricated sewerage pumping/lifting stations.

The second component of this project, the construction of the Sewerage Treatment Plant at L’Union Estate, was awarded to Green Island Construction Company (GICC), earlier this year.

This facility will have the capacity to treat an average flow of 1,000m3 per day. GICC is currently undertaking site preparation in anticipation of construction work, which will start soon.

A sewer service area is the expanse of land on which wastewater generated is collected, treated and safely disposed into the sea or used for irrigation purposes.

La Digue's sewer service area stretches from La Passe to L’Union Estate, along the west coast of the island. The southernmost tip of the demarcated sewer area is where the Sewage Treatment Plant will be located, as illustrated on the map.
Meanwhile, PUC representatives recently met with a group of concerned residents to clarify their doubts about establishing the plant at the designated location. All stakeholders are advised to forward their queries to PUC’s Project Liaison Officer on La Digue via the following email address; ladiguewwtp@puc.sc.
