The link between community and media
Each year on May 3, the world observes World Press Freedom Day. This day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, as a reminder of the importance of a free press, and the role it plays in shaping strong and informed communities.
According to the Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF) World Press Freedom Index 2025, published yesterday, the global state of press freedom is now classified as a “difficult situation” for the first time in the history of the Index. This is primarily due to economic pressure, an insidious problem faced by many news media around the globe, who are caught between preserving their independence, and ensuring their economic survival, in a landscape where ownership is concentrated, public aid is restricted or non-existent, and mounting pressure from advertisers and financial backers.
