Electoral Commission holds media training to enhance understanding of electoral processes
The Electoral Commission conducted a media training session last week aimed at deepening the media’s understanding of key electoral processes and legal frameworks ahead of the upcoming electoral period.
The training brought together journalists and media representatives for a comprehensive engagement on the Commission’s vision, mandate, and the crucial role of the media in promoting transparent and credible elections.
The session was led by senior officials of the Commission, including the Chief Electoral Officer. Manuella Amesbury, the Chief Registration Officer, Sheena Max, and the Senior Legal Officer, Florie Benstrong. Staff members from the Commission were also in attendance, contributing to a collaborative and informative environment.
Topics covered during the training included the Electoral Commission’s vision and legal obligations, the broader legal system governing elections, the registration of voters, and the nomination process for candidates.
Special attention was also given to electoral offences and the code of conduct for the media, with a focus on promoting responsible reporting and upholding the integrity of the electoral process.
Participants engaged actively throughout the session, seeking clarifications on complex issues and asking pertinent questions.
This dialogue highlighted the media’s commitment to accurate and ethical reporting, as well as the Commission’s openness to fostering mutual understanding and transparency.
The training was extended to social media administrators of popular local groups but very few responded. The Commission is hoping to attract this group for similar trainings in the future.
“We truly appreciated the media’s interest and active involvement, as they are one of our stakeholders and we need to work collaboratively with each other to ensure that the public receives timely, accurate, and impartial information during the electoral process,” said CEO Amesbury after reaffirming her commitment to working with all stakeholders as we count down to the country’s 2025 elections.
