IOT takes next step toward zero waste with new incinerator |04 June 2025

Addresses temporary odour

The Indian Ocean Tuna Ltd said the unusual smell occurring in Victoria and English River during the past few weeks was due to the installation of its new incinerator.

In a press release issued yesterday, the company’s general manager, Jamikara Techasaratoole, said the unusual odour was linked to the commissioning of a new incinerator installed by the Indian Ocean Tuna Ltd (IOT) at the beginning of May, as part of its long-term commitment to sustainability and responsibility to the community.

“The new incinerator is designed to safely and cleanly process the sludge generated by our wastewater treatment plant, thereby achieving our goal of zero sludge to landfill. This significant investment will reduce pressure on the existing landfill – both in terms of capacity and associated odours,” said the general manager.

To ensure minimal environmental impact, IOT has also installed a cyclone scrubber – a high-efficiency air pollution control device that removes particles and odorous compounds from the incinerator’s exhaust before it is released into the air, she added. “As with any newly installed and complex industrial equipment, the incinerator is currently undergoing commissioning and fine-tuning.”

According to Mrs Techasaratoole, during this adjustment period, some performance variations have temporarily contributed to the odour. “IOT is working closely with the technology supplier to resolve these issues as quickly as possible. IOT expects the equipment to be operating optimally by end of July 2025.”

Meanwhile the company has apologised to the public for the inconvenience caused and thanked them for their understanding and patience. “IOT remains fully committed to sustainable innovation and continuous improvement in its operations to minimise its environmental footprint,” she concluded.
