From tragedy to renewal: A national message of remembrance   |09 December 2025

“Two years ago, on this day, December 7, a tragic explosion at the CCCL depot profoundly impacted

our nation, especially the people of Cascade. As we pause to remember and reflect on that day, let us

honor those affected and reaffirm our collective resilience and unity.

“Many of us can still vividly recall the sound of the blast and the haunting images of devastation, which

remain deeply etched in our memories. The aftermath forced many families and communities to rebuild

from scratch. Two years later, while numerous homes and businesses have been restored and areas

revitalised, the memories of that day continue to serve as a powerful reminder of our strength and

resilience in facing adversity.

“In the wake of the tragedy, our nation came together, standing united with unwavering resolve to rebuild

and move forward. Seychelles is profoundly grateful to the international community and friendly nations

whose support and assistance were vital during this difficult period. I commend everyone who worked

tirelessly to restore what was lost. We acknowledge that healing is an ongoing process, and there is still

much to do to support the victims and to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

“As part of our commitment to transparency and support, I recently announced in my address to the

National Assembly the establishment of a Commission to investigate the CCCL explosion. We are in the

process of setting up the commission of enquiry to determine the circumstances leading to this calamity.

This effort aims to uncover what happened, bring clarity, and assist those still burdened by that day. It is

about promoting recovery and ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities.

“Today, we also remember with respect and reverence the lives of Dorothy Lafortune, Hakeem Antoine,

and Hyacinth Napoleon, whose lives were tragically lost during the devastating rainfall event that occurred

right after dusk on December 6, 2023. While the pain of loss remains, our focus now is on prevention,

safety, and healing. We continue to implement measures to protect our communities and support those

still affected.

“Let us draw strength from each other and continue to support one another with compassion and hope.

Together, we move forward with hope, compassion, and renewed resolve.”
