Pioneering coral breeding lab opens, boosting reef regeneration efforts

Canon EMEA, in partnership with Coral Spawning International and Nature Seychelles, has marked a breakthrough in reef restoration with the first successful coral spawning event at a newly established on-land breeding lab on Praslin Island, Seychelles.

Built as part of Nature Seychelles’ Assisted Recovery of Corals (ARC) facility, the lab represents a major step forward in combating climate change impacts on reefs by enabling controlled sexual reproduction of corals. Since its launch in November, the facility has produced approximately 800,000 embryos from 14 colonies of Acropora tenuis cf. macrostoma. Early results are promising, with around 65,000 corals settling – an encouraging sign for boosting genetic diversity and thermal resilience in Seychelles’ reefs.
