‘From observation to protection: Honouring meteorological services in Seychelles’

“Seychelles joins the global community in marking World Meteorological Day 2026 under the theme ‘Observing and Forecasting Today, Protecting Tomorrow’.

“On this occasion, we recognise the importance of meteorological services to the country’s safety and economy. This is also an opportune time to reflect on the essential role of meteorological services in protecting lives, supporting economic activities and strengthening resilience in the face of increasing weather and climate-related risks.

“The Seychelles Meteorological Authority remains a key pillar of the national disaster risk management system and an important contributor to socio-economic development, supporting decision-making across sectors such as aviation and maritime safety, infrastructure planning, tourism, fisheries and climate resilience.

“Observations collected today by the Seychelles Meteorological Authority – from weather stations, satellites, ocean monitoring systems and other technologies – form the foundation of forecasts and warnings that help society prepare for tomorrow.

“This year also marks 55 years since the meteorological services has been supporting the aviation industry in Seychelles. For more than five decades, meteorological services have played a vital role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of aviation operations – from the early days of aviation in the country to the modern air transport sector.

“This long-standing contribution reflects the strong foundations upon which meteorological services in Seychelles have been built and demonstrates their continued importance to national development.

The Ministry of Environment, Climate, Energy and Natural Resources remains committed to strengthening the meteorological services, enhancing early warning systems and investing in modern technologies to better protect lives, livelihoods and the environment.

“We are grateful to all meteorological professionals of the Seychelles Meteorological Authority for their dedication and continued service to the country.”
