A multi-stakeholder workshop organised under the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) project ‘Strengthening the Management of Abandoned, Lost or Otherwise Discarded Fishing Gear for Cleaner Oceans in the Western Indian Ocean’, in collaboration with the Government of Seychelles, was held yesterday at the Laïla Resort and Spa. The workshop focused on strengthening the management of abandoned, lost and end-of-life fishing gear through improved waste management strategies for ports and landing sites.

Bringing together representatives from the public and private sectors, the day-long session centred on co-designing systems for the collection, sorting and pre-treatment of fisheries waste to reduce marine pollution and promote a circular economy.

The workshop aimed to develop a national strategy for managing fisheries plastic waste in Seychelles in line with international standards, while establishing a practical framework for handling abandoned, lost and end-of-life fishing gear.
