Minister Faure sends congratulations to the UK’s new Foreign Secretary |24 July 2026
Following the appointment of The Right Honourable Ed Miliband MP as secretary of state for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Minister for Foreign Affairs & the Diaspora, Barry Faure, has extended his warm congratulations and best wishes for a successful tenure in office.
In his message, Minister Faure stated:
“As Seychelles commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of its Independence and our two countries celebrate fifty years of diplomatic relations, this milestone provides an opportune moment to reflect on the enduring friendship and close partnership that have characterised relations between Seychelles and the United Kingdom since 1976.
Throughout the past five decades, our cooperation has continued to expand across a broad range of sectors, particularly education, health, maritime security, economic security and environmental protection, underpinned by our shared commitment to democracy, the rule of law and the rules-based international order.
“The Chevening Scholarship Programme and the Manchester Twinning Programme have been successful in providing valuable opportunities for Seychellois to pursue higher education and professional development in the United Kingdom. More recently, the partnership between the University of Seychelles and the University of Oxford has opened new avenues for academic collaboration and research, further strengthening the educational ties between our two countries.
“The United Kingdom has also been an important partner in advancing maritime security in the Western Indian Ocean, including through its contribution to the Combined Maritime Forces and broader cooperation to promote regional stability and resilience in addressing piracy, transnational organised crime and Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.
“Seychelles greatly values the United Kingdom's steadfast support for small island developing states (Sids), including its advocacy for the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index and its commitment to advancing the implementation of the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for Sids. Such support is deeply appreciated and reflects our shared commitment to addressing the unique challenges facing island nations.”
