Trevallies observed scraping against reef sharks in Seychelles waters to remove parasites

Researchers analysing baited remote underwater video system (BRUVS) footage from Seychelles have documented a deliberate behaviour in which certain trevally species scrape themselves against large reef-associated sharks. The findings, published in the Journal of Fish Biology, represent the first records of this interaction involving bull sharks and tiger sharks in the wild.

The research was reported by Lauren De Vos on August 4, 2026 via the Save Our Seas D’Arros Research Centre website and is based on work led by Nico Fassbender and colleagues.
