‘US government thrilled to see more women represented in the highest leadership positions’ |08 March 2021

“Throughout history, women have led movements for social and economic justice, made groundbreaking scientific discoveries, enriched culture with stunning works of art and literature, and charted bold directions in foreign policy. During the month of March, we commemorate these contributions and celebrate International Women's Day on March 8.
“In the United States, March also offers a moment to reflect on recent accomplishments. I became Chargée d’Affaires on January 19, one day before the swearing in of Kamala Harris, the first woman, the first Black American, and the first South Asian American to be elected Vice- President of the United States. The US government is thrilled to see more women represented in the highest leadership positions of our democracy and in countries around the world. It is important to lead through example.
“Women's empowerment is also a vital part of US foreign policy. The US embassy, through exchange programmes, workshops and events, has fostered networks to connect women leaders from government, business, and civil society to address shared challenges.
“As we celebrate these accomplishments, we also recognise that the Covid-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact around the world; however, the pandemic has disproportionately impacted women. Women have taken on an increased responsibility to provide care within homes and communities while simultaneously facing higher risks of unemployment and gender-based violence. I understand first-hand that delicate balance of teleworking while caring for yourselves and your loved ones. Despite the numerous challenges facing women, we continue to demonstrate leadership, resiliency, and flexibility in our efforts to support our communities and families.
“As women and men continue to fight for equal seats at the table, the United States reaffirms our commitment to gender equality and joins us in celebrating International Women’s Day.”
