The historic, century-old Lailam Bakery reopens after 10 years

After a long period of closure, the iconic Lailam Bakery has reopened its doors after ten years, serving Seychelles’ baked good lovers once again with some of its most original and traditional breads and cakes.

The new bakery is located on Benezet Street in Victoria, just opposite where the old, beloved Lailam Breadshop was.

Representatives of the bakery told Seychelles NATION that they will be trying to offer as much of the classic favourites that were loved by the public before, plus of course a few new treats.

Among the top favourites were different kinds of breads and traditional cakes (‘feyte', 'dipen dou', and 'trout’).

We’re told that people have kept on enquiring about the bakery and food business, asking “Where’s all the good bread?” (“Oli sa bann bon dipen?”) and “Why have the Danish pastries gone?” (“Akoz feyte in ale?”).

We were curious about the history of the Lailam Bakery and were told by the representatives that it was first founded in the early 1900s and that it was functioning for more than 100 years on the islands!

They explain that the bakery was started by their grandfather who was originally from the Southern China Canton area, adding that the Chinese are always fond of making and eating food, and it was one of the skills they brought and blended into the Seychelles culture.

Lailam Bakery, they reveal, was among the very first food businesses to ever open in Seychelles, providing traditional, tasty baked goods at affordable prices that all our people appreciated.

The representatives continue, saying that when the Lailam Bakery closed down 10 years ago, Mr Ramu, the owner of Pillay R group, started renting the premises to make their own breadshop.

“So for all these years it's been confusing for people and they thought that it has been Lailam Bakery all along. The Lailam Bakery and Pillay R group are totally different.”

Today, with the great encouragement that the representatives say they have received from the public, Lailam Bakery is now open once again.
