The journey of Kurt Lagrenade

Interview conducted by Chelsea Laporte

Stand-up comedy is relatively new in Seychelles, with very few locals venturing into this artistic field in the past decades. However, there has been a shift in the past few years, with more artists performing this art form to a wider audience and attracting other aspired stand-up comedians to share their talent.

One of the pioneers in this field is Kurt Lagrenade – a well-known stand-up comedian who has participated in many pieces such as ‘Dan 5 minit’ and ‘Dracula dan Sesel’.

Seychelles NATION had a chat with him recently to learn why he has chosen this art form.

Seychelles NATION: Can you tell us about your journey and how you started in the industry?

Kurt Lagrenade: It all started when I was a student at Plaisance secondary back in 2002. My group of friends and I orchestrated a small play and through this, I got picked to participate in the annual ‘Moman Kreativite’ organised during the Creole Festival. This was my first and only time taking part in such an event, so you could say I am a late bloomer in the Creole Festival. That year I was also awarded the title of best artist.
