President Herminie’s message on International Day of Education

‘Education, discipline and opportunity for all’

“In commemorating the International Day of Education, as proclaimed by the United Nations, the government aligns itself with the global community in reaffirming education as a fundamental human right and a vital pillar of sustainable development, peace, and social progress.

“This observance, however, coincides meaningfully with the commencement of the 2026 school year and new academic term, a period that marks renewed purpose, responsibility, and commitment across our education system.

“On this occasion, I extend my sincere congratulations and appreciation to our educators, teachers, school leaders, school counsellors, and all education professionals, whose dedication and service continue to shape the minds and character of our children. Your role remains indispensable in nurturing knowledge, values, and discipline.

“The United Nations reminds us that education must be inclusive, resilient, and future-oriented, and that young people are essential partners in shaping learning systems that respond to contemporary challenges. Seychelles fully unites itself with this global vision.

“In this regard, our government’s approach to education places strong emphasis on quality, equity, relevance, and opportunity for all learners. Our commitment is to strengthen the education system through improved learning environments, enhanced teacher support, modern curricula, and the integration of science, technology, and innovation, while ensuring that no child is left behind. Our long-term plan is to implement key policies to support and strengthen our education system, ensuring it is both future-ready and equitable.

“Education, however, extends beyond academic achievement. Discipline, personal grooming, respect, and responsibility remain fundamental pillars of effective learning and character formation. These values must be consistently upheld within our schools and reinforced through strong collaboration between educators, parents, and communities.

“As we begin this new academic year, I encourage our students to approach their studies with dedication and purpose, and to embrace education not only as a pathway to personal advancement, but as a means of national development and unity.

“To conclude, let us commit to our responsibility to safeguard and strengthen our education system for the benefit of present and future generations. I wish all learners, educators, and education stakeholders a successful and productive school year.”
