LDS’ message for Labour Day 2020 |02 May 2020
‘We have to continue on the path of unity and solidarity’
“If we have been able to keep on top of this crisis up to now, it is because we have all worked hard to build our country and we have been able to show unity and solidarity, to overcome the things that can divide and weaken us. We have to continue on this path.”
This comes in a message from the leader of the Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS), Roger Mancienne, on the occasion of Labour Day celebrated yesterday, May 1.
Mr Mancienne’s message reads:
“In these difficult times when public celebrations have to be put aside, our commemoration of Labour Day, May 1, takes on a special meaning.
“The public health emergency which we continue to face has shown us the courage and commitment of our workers in health and other essential services. We owe them our thanks and continued support. Their work has also set an example for us all to follow as we face the economic challenges that are before us, which we can only meet with the same dedication.
“Labour Day in the middle of this crisis is an opportunity for us to reflect on our work and to draw lessons for the future. We realise that we cannot take things for granted because calamities also are part of life. We are led to appreciate the work we are able to do for a livelihood and to value more highly what we can contribute to the organisations of which we are part and to the nation to which we belong. Faced with many uncertainties over our occupations and livelihoods in the months ahead, we are called upon to adapt to new norms and practices, to take on new roles where necessary, just as our country is called upon to re-assess our goals and strategies for the future and employers are called upon to transform their businesses to meet the challenges ahead.
“If we have been able to keep on top of this crisis up to now, it is because we have all worked hard to build our country and we have been able to show unity and solidarity, to overcome the things that can divide and weaken us. We have to continue on this path.
“On this occasion, LDS re-affirms its commitment to stand by our workforce and to join with them in defending their rights, safeguarding their well-being and improving their conditions. We stand together in the mission of strengthening our society and our country.
“Without public celebrations, Labour Day is still an occasion to value and appreciate. We wish all workers an enjoyable quiet day with their families. Let us look forward to getting back to work on Monday with renewed strength and commitment.”
