The Seychelles Prison Service has confirmed that over the past week it detained two visitors on separate incidents.
They were both handed over to the Anti-Narcotic Bureau (ANB) of the Seychelles Police, after search found suspect drugs in their possession.
The first incident occurred on the afternoon of October 29, 2020 at SPS Montagne Posée prison when staff observed a female visitor, when submitting to be searched, attempting to hide an item in her hand. The item was found to be a leafy green substance wrapped in clear plastic.
The ANB was notified with the suspect transported to the ANB by the prison security unit for further investigation. The suspect items, confirmed to be marijuana, weighed approximately 3.18 grammes. The suspect stated that the items were for her own personal consumption.
The second incident occurred during the early evening of November 4, 2020 at the SPS Bois de Rose detention remand facility when staff checking food being delivered for a detainee found within the food box, a clear plastic bag with a white powdery substance. The visitor denied knowledge of the item. The suspect, along with her three-year-old child, were escorted by ANB for further questioning. The item found was confirmed to be heroin and weighing approximately 10 grammes.
Cases have been filed in both instances.
The Seychelles Prison Service takes this opportunity to remind visitors to its facilities that it is an offence to bring contraband or drugs, or alcohol onto its premises. Appropriate measures will be taken.
“Addiction to drugs is bad enough. Do not make a situation worse by trying to smuggle this poison into any community and possibly ruining your life and that of your children even more. It is more than time for friends, family, loved ones to stand firm and not tolerate drugs within our families or with friends. Seek help!”
