Health ministry profoundly saddened by health worker’s death from Covid-19

Gerry Govinden

The minister and staff of the Ministry of Health are profoundly saddened by the death of a health worker, Gerry Govinden, who passed away at 3.30am on April 12, 2021 from health complications resulting from Covid-19. He was 42 years old.

The minister and staff have extended their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the health worker.

Gerry started working as a nurse at the psychiatric ward in mid-July 2000 before moving to England with his family on March 29, 2003.

He worked for a while as a health care assistant before moving back to Seychelles on June 3, 2014 ‒ the same day his mother passed away.

Nicknamed ‘Doc’ by most of his patients at both the wellness centre and psychiatric ward, Gerry rejoined the Ministry of Health in 2015 until he left this world yesterday morning.

Someone who enjoyed life to the fullest and always shared anecdotes, Gerry was also a part-time lecturer at the National Institute of Health and Social Services (NIHSS). His colleagues have described him as someone who always put the lives of his patients first, always willing to cover for someone who was absent and caring.
