Military recognises ranks, promote two

Two second lieutenants, Andy Cadeau and Michael Hollanda were promoted to the rank of lieutenant Thursday during the ceremony, marked with music from the National Brass Brand and a parade.

Chief of Staff Colonel Leopold Payet replaced Lt Cadeau’s old epaulettes – the shoulder straps that indicate rank -- with new ones to reflect the promotion.

Lt Cadeau said the promotion entailed more responsibility, which he hoped he would be able to assume. He said he felt the promotion was in recognition of his hard work.

Michael Hollanda, the other officer to be promoted to lieutenant, could not be present for the ceremony.

Medals and certificates of different merits were also handed out to about 70 officers in recognition of their years of service, some of whom had logged 25 years in a military career.

Colonel Payet took the ceremony as an opportunity to encourage his troops to fight against wastage of the military’s time and resources.

In his speech he said that senior officers were not only responsible for issuing orders, but also had to take responsibility for the same orders they issue.

Different platoons from the army and coast guard also marched in a parade despite rainy conditions that would eventually drench the servicemen as they stood at attention for the bulk of the ceremony.

Thursday morning's promotions and awards, followed in the afternoon by a wreath laying ceremony at the Victory Monument at the airport, marked the beginning of activities for Defence Forces Day 2004.

A religious service at the Coast Guard base will be held this Friday November 26 (morning), while Saturday November 27 (evening) will see a boxing competition at the Anse Royale Community Centre. A sporting and recreational day at the Anse Royale playing field on Sunday morning will cap the festivities.
