Kokonet and Intelvision endorse peering link |14 July 2006
One of the most important benefits of this link is faster transmission of e-mails between subscribers of the two internet companies, as these would not have to travel across the global satellite links any more. Besides e-mails, the local link will also enable faster transmission of other data.
Before the installation of the link, data travelling from a Kokonet subscriber to an Intelvision subscriber took some 650 milli-seconds. This, according to Kokonet, has been reduced to less than 10 milli-seconds.
The proper configuration of equipment by both ISPs is all that was needed for the setting up of the peering link.
The director of Kokonet, Bernard Moutia, said that the company had long believed that peering arrangements between ISPs were beneficial to the country's internet community.
He said Kokonet was hoping that this particular link was seen as a "precursor for the setting up of a wider Internet Exchange that would accommodate all of the country's ISPs."
"ISPs need to be bold enough to cooperate with competitors and realise that the whole of Seychelles Internet community will welcome and benefit from the setting up of the Internet Exchange," Mr Moutia said.
Intelvision has on its part said that it was dedicated on improving service levels to its subscribers and as such was also pursuing a similar peering link with Atlas.
"Should the peering arrangement materialise, it will immensely increase the access of e-mails among all internet subscribers," said Mr Reza Jaro, the marketing manager of Intelvision.
