Weightlifting: Open Championship-Siméon, Uzice voted best lifters

Charles Siméon snatches the bar at 115kgUzice won the best female lifter title with a total of 110kg

Compared to last year when three records were broken, this time no national mark was beaten at Victoria Gymnasium.

At the end of the championship, Naira Uzice and reigning male lifter of the year Charles Siméon were voted the best female and male lifters.

Competing in the 53-kg division, Uzice, with a body weight of 51.5-kg, snatched 50kg and clean-and-jerked 60kg for an Olympic total of 110kg.

Runner-up to Sportsman of the Year Laser sailor Allan Julie in the Sports Awards of the Year 2005, Charles Siméon’s total lift was 260kg – 115kg in the snatch and 145kg in the clean-and-jerk. He twice failed to lift 155kg in the clean-and-jerk.

SWA chairman Robert Rose explained that they had been forced to stage their first competition for this year only last week because of a lack of venue.

“Our first competition was to be held at the Omnisports Gym at Roche Caïman earlier in the season. But we had to call it off as lifters complained in the past, that they dehydrate too much inside this venue,” said Rose.

As for the absence of five of the country’s top lifters, weightlifting boss Rose explained that Agricole and Thélermont are training in South Africa ahead of the African Weightlifting Championship in Morocco from August 24 to 31, while Jeanne and Baccus are injured and Matatiken has not been training of late because of her work schedule.

The following are the complete results of the championship
- Naira Uzice 53-kg senior, (110kg in total, 50kg snatch and 60kg clean-and-jerk),
- Brenda Lozaique, 63-kg junior, (0kg in total, 55kg snatch and failed all her three 70kg clean-and-jerk attempts),
