STAR to modernize waste management programme on Praslin and La Digue

STAR’s managing director, Ludovic Fiers, said this on Wednesday August 16 when handing over 816 new litter bins to the Department of Environment.

Stating that the company is satisfied with its waste management programme on Mahe, Mr Fiers said that nevertheless, there is a need to modernize and improve the programme on Praslin and La Digue.

He added that this forms part of the company’s new investment plan for 2007 in a bid to cope with the increasing amount of waste and number of vandalism cases by the general public.

Some of the new bins have already been placed in the most bin-deprived areas of Mahe while the rest will be distributed over the coming weeks.

Mr Fiers said that the new litter bins followed a survey carried out last year where the company noted that a total number of 500 litter bins had been damaged.

STAR (Seychelles) is also expecting the arrival of 4 brand new waste compactor trucks early September, which will improve the waste collection service.

The bins have been imported from Singapore at a cost of R500,000.
The principal secretary for Environment, Rolf Payet, who accepted the bins from Mr Fiers, said that his department has established a new and closer collaboration with STAR (Seychelles) so as to deliver a high standard of service to the public.

Noting that the environment department and STAR (Seychelles) have already identified various locations in all districts that are in need of litter bins, Mr Payet has called on members of the public to use the facilities well and to put a stop to acts of vandalism.
