Swimming: Sacos School Age Group Championship-International School first-rate with seven titles and eight records

International School swimmers and coaches celebrate their winsAmong the spectators to watch the finals, which saw 11 records broken compared to last year’s only one, were the Minister for the Arts Culture and Sports, Ms Sylvette Pool, her principal secretary Denis Rose, and Seychelles Swimming Association chairperson Jean-Paul Adam.

The first record to fall was in the girls’ 50m butterfly in the 10-11 years old category where International School’s Amina Ward-Horner bettered her own 56.23 seconds record with a clocking of 53.66 seconds in the 25m pool.

In the 4 x 25m freestyle relay for girls in the 7-9 years old category, the International School, comprising Magdalena Flynn, Maria Marzocchi, Anissia Payet and Aurelie Fanchette, clocked 1 minute 23.66 seconds (1:23.66) to pulverise the old record of 1:35.65 set seven years ago by the French School.

Swimmers from the International School bettered two other records in the 25m pool before the competition switched to the Olympic-size 50m pool.

In the boys’ 10-11 years 4 x 50 m freestyle relay, Liam Flynn, Dominique D’Offay, Adam Viktora and Ashen Tennege joined forces to stop the clock at 2:39.58, thus improving the old record of 2:40.98 they established during the heats.

Florence Barois, Gaia Peroliri, Marquise Charlette and Amina Ward-Horner swam well to clock 3:09.19 to win the 4 x 50 m freestyle relay gold medal in the girls’ 10-11 age category and wipe out the old record which stood at 3:18.38.

Belonie Secondary School’s Shane Mangroo was the first record breaker in the 50m pool, improving both the school and national age group 50m freestyle records in the boys’ 12-13 years old age group with a time of 28.70 seconds. The school record of 29.21 seconds belonged to his big brother Steven Mangroo, while the national age group record of 28.80 seconds was held by Adrian Nanty.

In fact, Shane got another record in the 50m backstroke, clocking 35.09 seconds to improve his brother’s (Steven Mangroo) old time of 36.22 seconds.

In the 12-13 years old girls’ 50m freestyle, Shannon Austin of International School, replaced her sister Shrone as the record holder with a performance of 30.11 seconds, 41 hundredths of a second faster than the former Sportslady of the Year’s old record of 30.52 seconds.

Apparently Shannon told her sister Shrone that she would break her 12-13 years old 50m butterfly record and she did it with a time of 33.47 seconds, which proved to be faster than the old school record of 34.43 seconds and the age group best time of 33.98 seconds.

In the girls’ 50m backstroke race in the 12-13 years old age group, Nina Reinschmidt of International School replaced Claire Marguerite’s six-year-old record of 38.62 seconds with a new time of 36.83 seconds. Reinschmidt also swam faster than Shrone Austin’s national age group record of 37.42 seconds but her time cannot go down as a Seychelles record because she is not a Seychellois.

In the 50m breaststroke for boys 12-13 years old, Dwayne Didon of Independent School sliced 27 hundredths of a second off Guy Low’s old time of 39.99 seconds after touching the pad in 39.74 seconds.

In the 4 x 50m freestyle relay for girls in the 12 to 13 years old category, the International School team of Shannon Austin, Tifanny Gold, Nina Reinschmidt and Aurélie D’Offay, bettered their old record of 2:29.70 set last year by clocking 2:16.33.

With seven shields won this time, International School swimmers bettered last year’s performance when they went home with five shields, the same total won in 2003. The competition was not organised in 2004 due to the closure of the pools.

Independent School won two shields and Belonie Secondary School won the other one in Thursday’s finals.
