Football: African club competitions draw-Seychelles teams get IO opponents |06 December 2007
After achieving a League and Cup double this year – exactly 10 years after their first double in 1997 – St Michel have been drawn against US Tamponnaise of Reunion in the first round. Assuming they win on aggregate score, St Michel will move to the second round where they will face the winners of the first-round match-up between Platinum Stars (South Africa) and Lesotho Correction Services (Lesotho).
St Michel will play away during the weekend of February 15-17, 2008 and the return match will be played at Stad Linite a fortnight later (between February 29 and March 1-2, 2008).
St Michel’s coach Ralph ‘Tiapout’ Jean-Louis said that “the draw is a good one. It’s best to play away first so that you get to study your opponents. Then we can make the difference in the return leg match at home. We will start preparing for the 2008 season on January 7 and I firmly believe we can go past the first hurdle this time.”
This is the second year St Michel have been drawn against a Reunionnais outfit. They were dumped by St Pauloise FC in the first round of the 2007 Confederation Cup – winning 2-1 at Stad Linite with goals from Malagasy Leonni Nastina (penalty) and Seychelles left winger Alex Nibourette before losing 0-1 in Reunion
St Michel’s first meeting against a Reunionnais opponent was against AS Marsouins in the Caf Champions League in 2001. After eliminating Madagascar’s AS Fortior 3-1 (0-0 in Madagascar and 3-1 at Stad Linite) in the preliminary round, St Michel won the first round tie against AS Marsouins on the away goals rule after the score was tied 4-4.
Malagasy Clovis and Kenyan James Omondy scored a goal each in the 2-3 away loss. In the return leg, Omondy again netted a goal and Philip Zialor added another in a 2-1 win as St Michel set up a second round match-up against the mighty Al-Ahly, losing 0-6 (0-5 in Cairo and 0-1 at Stad Linite).
Anse Réunion get Petite Rivière Noire in Confederation Cup
Drawn against Petite Rivière Noire of Mauritius in the first round of the Confederation Cup, Anse Réunion will be making their third participation in any African club competitions.
La Digue-based Anse Réunion will host Petite Rivière Noire in the first leg encounter during the weekend of February 15-17, 2008 and will travel to Mauritius for the return match to be played between February 29 and March 1-2, 2008.
In the event of Anse Réunion getting the nod against Petite Rivière Noire in the first round, they will meet Ajax Cape Town (South Africa) in the next round.
Speaking to Sports Nation in a telephone conversation, Anse Réunion’s team manager Michel Albert said “this is a good draw and I hope we will go through.”
The first time Anse Réunion competed at this level was in 2003 in the old African Cup Winners’ Cup and they were eliminated by Kenya Pipeline in the first round.
Anse Réunion progressed to the first round of the competition after walking over Masvingo of Zimbabwe in the preliminary round. They lost 8-9 on penalties to Kenya Pipeline in the first round after the score had remained tied at 3-3 after the two ties. Anse Réunion lost 1-2 away and won 2-1 at Stad Linite. Malagasy striker Amisy Voavy scored once in both ties and his compatriot Jocelyn Joaravean got the other goal in the home tie.
In the 2007 Caf Champions League, Anse Réunion bowed out after a 0-3 aggregate loss.
They held the Malagasies of AS Adema to a goalless away draw before going down 0-3 at Stad Linite in the return leg fixture.
