Football: St Louis Suns United-Exhibition match highlight of Fun Day |12 February 2008

On Sunday afternoon, the club’s supporters came in numbers to Stad Popiler to join the players and members of management in a fun day.

The highlight of the day was an exhibition match between the current team who finished third in last year’s Barclays League division one and retired players who used to play for the old St Louis and Sunshine teams.

The St Louis Suns United team won the match against the St Louis Suns Old Stars on a 6-0 score.
Without one of their past goalkeepers ready to play as Ange ‘Ti Anz’ Dubignon and William Bijoux were in the stands, former Grand Anse Mahe team goalkeeper Danny Laurette, who is also the technical advisor on the club’s coaching staff, decided to go between the posts for the ‘Old Stars’ and he conceded five goals in the first half.

Achille Henriette opened the floodgates with a right foot volley from a Mervyn Mathiot right wing cross and Nerrick Athanase doubled the score from Fabien Cadeau’s assist. Cadeau turned from provider to scorer as his strong left foot shot went in off the left post. Yannick Charlette made it 4-0 after accepting a Mathiot pass and Cadeau completed his brace by rounding former Seychelles sweeper Alex Labiche to place the ball into the net.

The ‘Old Stars’ made nine changes at the start of the second period and with a much younger line-up and goalkeeper Eugene Valentin in goal for them to try and stop the St Louis Suns United’s onslaughts, they conceded just one goal.

Jude Marie was the scorer of St Louis Suns United’s sixth goal late in the match which lasted 70 minutes.

The winning team got a cup and calendars, while members of the ‘Old Stars’ team received T-Shirts and a shield.

Meanwhile, the winner of the lottery got a football signed by all the players. The second prize was a season’s ticket and third prize a T-Shirt. On sale on the day were T-Shirts of all sizes, calendars and season’s tickets.

The club also announced in their newsletter St Louis Sun NEWZ that defender Jonathan Bibi has taken over the captain’s armband from midfielder Denis Barbé.

They also announced that their fan club will be launched soon and those wishing to join will have to make a yearly membership fee of R200.
