Weightlifting: Open Championship-Agricole, Télémaque record breakers

A three-time 58-kg bronze medallist at the Ninth All-Africa Games in Algiers, Algeria, in TÉLÉMAQUE ... junior clean-and-jerk record performance of 71kg2007, Agricole has moved up a category this year to compete in the 63-kg division.

Aged 19, Agricole got records in both the junior and senior categories. She first equalled Janet Thélermont’s 70kg snatch junior best established on April 24, 1999. She then failed her third and final snatch attempt of 76kg, thus missing out by a whisker on improving the three-time Sportslady of the Year’s senior record of 75kg set on November 25, 2005.

When Agricole returned to the platform for the clean-and-jerk event, she was determined to rewrite the record books. She heaved 85kg and 90kg in her first two tries before lifting the bar loaded at 96kg over her head to better Thélermont’s old senior record of 95kg (set on November 25, 2006) as well as her junior record of 80.5kg (set on April 24, 1999).

Her Olympic total of 166kg did not get her the senior record of 170kg held by Thélermont, but it was good enough to beat the old junior best by 16kg. The same Thélermont had set the previous best mark of 150kg on April 24, 1999.

Speaking to Sports Nation, Agricole said:
“I’m happy with how I performed although I did not expect to improve records in the first AGRICOLE – new junior and senior clean-and-jerk mark in the 63-kg categorycompetition of the year. On the other hand, I’m disappointed that the African Junior Championship has been postponed. I was hoping to win some medals at African level in my last outing as a junior lifter.”

Kathsia Télémaque’s target was to improve her junior best lifts in both the snatch and clean-and-jerk events set during the Seventh Indian Ocean Islands Games (IOIG) in Madagascar last year.

After snatching 55kg in her first attempt, Télémaque twice failed to lift the bar loaded at 62kg. Having missed the snatch record of 61kg, the 19-year-old made sure of getting a record in the clean-and-jerk with a best lift of 71kg in her third attempt.

“I’m satisfied with my performance as I did quite well when carrying injuries,” Télémaque told Sports Nation.
