Athletics: Under-16 Pentathlon competition -First honours go to Labiche and Marianne |01 April 2008

The participants had to compete in five track and field events on one day and they were awarded points based on the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) scoring table. The points were added up at the end of the day to determine the winners. Labiche’s and Marianne’s final total have gone down as new records as it is the first time that such a competition is organised here in this age group.

Female winner Labiche of the East Coast club collected her most points – 764 – in the high jump event after clearing the bar at 1.60 metres for a personal best. In her second stint in track and field after a short spell as a basketballer, Labiche also won the 100m (13.3 seconds), long jump (4.66m) and ball throw (22.88m).

With a time of 2 minutes, 06.3 seconds, Labiche finished second to Marie-Antoinette Robert (2 minutes 00.3 seconds) in the 600m race, but the 15-year-old’s total of 3,048 points earned her first place overall.

In the boys’ category, Carlos Marianne, who normally concentrates on short distance sprinting, took the bold decision of attempting four new events last Saturday and it was worth the try as he took home the winner’s trophy with 2,133 points.

After clocking 12.0 seconds to win the 100m, the 14-year-old River Star sprinter collected three more wins by clearing the bar at 1.50m in the high jump, leaping over a distance of 5.25m in the long jump and clocking 2 minutes 26.0 seconds in the 800m.

His only defeat was in the ball throw with a distance of 31.75m, 5.46m shorter than Darren Albert’s winning distance of 37.21m.
