Seychelles’ scouts choose new leaders

The scouts’ annual general meeting on Saturday

He was elected during the association’s annual general meeting last weekend at the Petit Séminaire, Mont Fleuri, and replaces Bernard Elizabeth, who has taken up the post of chief scout.

Steve Lalande is the association’s new international commissioner, while Sonia Gonthier and Michel Felix are secretary and treasurer.
Five area commissioners were also elected – Marylyn Marie is the new commissioner for the inner islands while Valerie Savy, Jean Barbé, Marie-Hélène Adrienne and Mary-Anne Amade will fill the posts on Mahe.

Holbert Jean will have the responsibility of guiding the cub scouts, while Odile Benoit and Monica Uzice were chosen as leaders’ representatives.

Mr Marie described his new post as a big challenge with his primary goal to revitalise the association and to overcome one of the main problems, a lack of leaders.

He said there are quite a large number of scouts but they need more leaders to guide and help in adopting and practising good values, which would be beneficial to the communities and the country as a whole.

Besides the election and reports by leaders, the launch of the association’s website project was on the agenda. The website, which is still under construction, will feature both national and international information regarding the scout movement.

The meeting ended with the presentation of certificates to some of the scout leaders who attended the basics and introductory course held on Praslin last month.

The Seychelles Scouts’ Association was founded in 1927 and became a member of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement in 2002.
