Football: Barclays League Division one-St Louis Suns, St Michel, LightStars victorious |22 September 2008
La Passe had become the second team to inflict a defeat on St Michel on Saturday September 13 on a 2-1 score on La Digue and a week later they travelled to Praslin with the aim of extending their winning run.
Proving to be a hard nut to crack this season especially at home, LightStars gave their supporters something to cheer about by producing a hold-up – coming from a goal down to win 2-1 against La Passe.
Bertrand Esther was LightStars’ hero, scoring twice in the second period – from the penalty spot and with a header in time added on – as coach James Barra’s team stay fourth in the eight-team league standings with 25 points, while La Passe remain second on 29.
Malagasy Assam Abdou got the game’s first goal in the second half with a free-kick to give La Passe the lead.
At Stad Linite on Saturday, St Michel rebounded from their last defeat to overcome Foresters 3-1.
Philip Zialor opened the scoring for St Michel in the 66th minute but Norvil Gaspard pulled Foresters level with a 75th minute goal.
Three minutes later, Zialor got his second personal goal to give St Michel back the lead and Malagasy Pascal scored the leaders’ third goal on the stroke of full-time.
St Michel are now on 35 points after 11 wins in 15 games played. Also boasting two draws and two losses, St Michel have now stretched to six their points difference over La Passe but they have played a game more than the La Digue-based team.
Also at Stad Linite, but this time last Friday, St Louis Suns United added to Plaisance’s worries with a 4-0 success.
With new Malagasy recruit Jean Del’Or Carolus Tsaralaza in the stands as his papers are still not in order, Congolese Jonathan Mbanze gave St Louis Suns the lead in the eighth minute before midfielder Denis Barbé weaved his way into the Plaisance penalty area to score with a 23rd-minute far-post effort.
Yannick Charlette made it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time and second half substitute Nerrick Athanase added the final nail to Plaisance’s coffin in the 70th minute.
