Scouts mark Founder’s Day |21 February 2009

Scouts mark Founder’s Day

They will be introduced to their new national executive coordinator, Francis Accouche, who is a familiar voice to a lot of Feba radio listeners as well as to those who have followed coverage of the Olympics and All Africa Games by the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation.

He will be at the Children’s Playground in Victoria tomorrow to oversee the association’s programme of activities, due to start with a youth service at 10am.

This will be followed by other activities and entertainment, which will go on till 3pm.

Due to lack of money, Praslin scouts will not travel to Mahe but will instead attend a church service followed by a picnic at Côte d’Or beach.
This first major event on the Seychelles scouting calendar for 2009 will be followed by a two-day strategic workshop for leaders, venturers and commissioners that will coincide with the visit of  Elzette Balgobin, unit manager for the Indian Ocean Zone of Africa’s regional office.

Mrs Balgobin will arrive in Seychelles on Thursday and stay for a week.
“Scouting is fast coming back to life in Seychelles,” said chief commissioner John Marie, “and this year we have a full calendar of activities both locally and internationally.”

Tomorrow will mark the 152nd anniversary of the birth of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the World Scout Movement, and celebrated by nearly 28 million scouts across the world as Founder’s Day. Baden-Powell shared his birthday with his wife, Olave, who later became World Chief Guide.

“This is an occasion not just to celebrate the founders but also the special spirit of unity that is being promoted in Seychelles. Hence the reason for linking up with the Anglican Youth group for the service,” said Mr Marie.

He said activities at the Children’s Playground are open to the public as well as all scouts, past and present.
