IMO head in talks at Port Victoria |04 April 2009
The visit was the first item on the itinerary of the secretary-general, who had arrived in Seychelles that same day. It included a technical meeting, followed by a brief tour of Port Victoria.
Representatives from the Seychelles Maritime Safety Administration, National Maritime Security Committee, Seychelles Petroleum Company, Maritime Training Centre and Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Transport were also present.
Talks were aimed at benefiting from the technical expertise of IMO members in training local security personnel to be better equipped in the fight against piracy in the Indian Ocean region.
The active support of the IMO is also needed to incorporate the recommendations of its sub-regional meeting on maritime safety, held in Djibouti in January 2009, into the national legislation of Seychelles.
