African Weightlifting Championships-Podium finish for Thélermont |06 August 2009
At the Imperial Royale Hotel, three-time former Sportswoman of the Year Thélermont matched her snatch record of 82kg to win the silver medal and finished with 95kg in the clean-and-jerk – 1kg less than her record of 96kg – to grab the bronze medal
Thélermont, who dropped to the lighter 63kg category this year after previously competing in the 69kg and 75kg divisions, took the bronze medal with an Olympic total of 177kg.
The only local male lifter at the championships, Charles Siméon, was expected in action last night.
Katsia Télémaque was the first Seychellois lifter in action on Tuesday and she grabbed three gold medals in the junior category and a silver in the senior division of the 48kg weight category.
She snatched 63kg to improve her previous Seychelles junior and senior records of 62kg registered during the Open Championship in May to win the junior gold and senior silver.
In clean & jerk, Télémaque beat her old junior best of 70kg with a lift of 73kg for an Olympic total of 136kg – a junior Seychelles record – to make a clean sweep of the gold medals in the younger age group.
Clementina Agricole snatched a new Seychelles record of 78kg – 5kg more than her previous best set in May – to win the silver medal in the women’s senior 53kg category, despite picking up a leg injury while on the platform,
She was third in the clean & jerk as she equalled her Seychelles record of 92kg to win a bronze medal.
Agricole’s Olympic total of 170kg earned her the silver medal and a new Seychelles record.
