President’s message to mark 34 years of independence:-Our success as a nation is built on unity and love |30 June 2010

Speaking in his message to the people ahead of yesterday’s Independence Day celebrations, he said on June 29, 1976, the bad memories of colonial rule were left behind. But progress as a nation has not been based on these bad experiences.
“We built our nation with determination, resilience, tolerance, hard work, unity and love,” said Mr Michel in a message that was broadcast on SBC television on Monday night.

“We continously recalled that we are united as a people. We do not believe in division and we will never let this proud and blessed nation become divided.”

The President thanked all those who fought for the independence of Seychelles, a just and noble cause that continues to inspire many to this day.

The values of patriotism and unity have formed the heart of the nation, and must be nurtured, he added.
Mr Michel said it is sad that certain currents in Seychellois society, motivated by bitterness and jealousy, are trying to destroy these values.

“Hatred, racism and xenophobia are not in our nature. We, the Seychellois people, we sow – and we will continue to sow – love, tolerance, harmony, patriotism and unity,” he said.

“Let us continue to cultivate these good values and encourage them in our children.”
