National Open Swimming Championship-Shannon Austin, Mangroo reclaim titles

        MANGROO … men’s champion      AUSTIN … women’s winner

Outgoing female and male swimmers of the year Shannon Austin and Shane Mangroo had enough power to touch the wall first, earning the highest points on the Fédération internationale de natation (Fina) scoring system to finish as national champions for 2010.

Back home from South Africa, where she had been training since mid-January under South African 4x100m freestyle Olympic gold medallist Ryk Neethling, Austin arrived on time on Saturday morning to take part in the final day’s events and finished the 50m freestyle in 29.48 seconds to earn 683 points.

Second and third in the race were Aurelie Fanchette (30.25 seconds for 644 points) and Anisha Payet (33.09 seconds for 516 points).

Austin is now in Singapore competing in the first Youth Olympic Games. She is the only Seychellois qualifier, beating the entry times in the 200m and 400m freestyle.

Twice bronze medallist at the first African Youth Games in Morocco last month, Young Male Athlete of the Year Mangroo powered to the wall of the men’s 50m freestyle in 25.39 seconds to garner 721 points.

Adrian Nanty (26.45 seconds for 658 points) and Adam Viktora (27.48 seconds for 602 seconds) were ranked second and third in the race.

Shannon Austin and Mangroo reclaimed the titles they surrendered to Sportswoman of the Year 2003 Shrone Austin and Adam Viktora last year when the winners were decided on points accumulated. They each got a glass trophy.

In the 2009 National Open Swimming Championship, the swimmers could choose to compete in as many events as they wanted and were awarded points according to their final placings in each event.

Again this year, they could choose to compete in as many events as they wanted, but most of them decided to take part in events where they felt they could clock a good time to earn the highest Fina points possible.
