Football-Poiret takes footballer of the year title |30 November 2010
Trevor Poiret has been named footballer of the year by the Seychelles Football Federation for his outstanding form throughout the 2010 season.
The 22-year-old, who has won seven Seychelles caps at senior level, was instrumental in St Louis Suns’ cup campaign, which culminated in a 1-0 extra-time win against La Passe in the final.
Speaking to Sports Nation, Poiret – who has over the past three years established himself in the St Louis Suns first team, – said: “I always told myself that I would win the footballer of the year title. But I did not expect it to come that early.
“I’m happy I’ve been chosen as footballer of the year and feel that it will work as an encouragement for the rest of my career.”
Son of the old St Louis team’s diminutive super-sub Willis ‘Tibo’ Dufresne, Poiret is confident St Louis Suns will have a good 2011 season.
“Next year, we will target winning the Barclays league division one title. But I urge my teammates to be more serious and make a choice as to what they want to do. We cannot afford to lose players through doping punishments. This is not good,” he said.
Poiret succeeds Northern Dynamo’s defender-cum-defensive-midfielder Steve Henriette as player of the year.
Seychelles’ left-footed playmaker and captain Don Anacoura, who led St Michel to reclaiming the Barclays league division one title, is this year’s second best footballer, and his teammate Karl Hall has finished third.
After leading La Digue Veuve to a clean sweep of all the titles – Federation Cup, Land Marine Cup and Barclays league – Diguois Natacha Bibi is the women’s footballer of the year, taking over from United Sisters’ Vanessa Dick.
Scorer of 30 goals this year – one in the Federation Cup, 24 in the league and five in the Land Marine Cup – Bibi, 26, said: “I’m proud of myself and happy to have won the title after missing it last year. I really performed well this season.”
Rachim Padayachy of the Cadets team, who has played for the country’s senior team, is the young male player of the year.
The winners will be rewarded during a gathering on Saturday December 18, starting at 5pm at the Maison Football.
