President and Princess talk of friendship and shared history

Monday evening’s meeting was an occasion for President Michel and Princess Anne to speak about the friendly relations between Seychelles and the UK

The President and Princess Anne spoke about the friendly relations between Seychelles and the United Kingdom in view of the shared history and continuing partnership in many areas.

Mr Michel told her about Seychelles’ fight against piracy as well as the complex political situation in Somalia that has provoked maritime security concerns.

“Seychelles is at the forefront of the fight against piracy. Our economy and trade have been seriously affected by the piracy attacks,” he said during the meeting.

“We are deeply grateful for the assistance given to us in the anti-piracy mission by the United Kingdom, particularly through the EU-Navfor’s Atalanta mission.

“The work of the EU force has been essential in helping us to track down pirates, as well as to liberate our Seychellois fishermen when they were taken hostage recently.”

The President and the Princess also commented on the changes in climate that Seychelles is experiencing, particularly in relation to the current water shortage.

Mr Michel then congratulated Princess Anne on the work of the Save the Children charity, of which she is the patron.
Yesterday she visited the President’s Village with Mrs Michel to see the work of the Children’s Homes Foundation, of which the First Lady is the patron.

Princess Anne noted the impressive development of Seychelles’ tourism industry and commented on how well the sector is doing at the moment.

Mr Michel said the Seychelles Tourism Board is working hard to develop new markets, and more emphasis is being placed on reviving the UK market, especially as it once held second place for visitors to Seychelles.

The President thanked the Princess Royal for attending the inauguration of the University of Seychelles, and they spoke about the importance of ensuring that UniSey graduates are retained in the economy by creating new jobs and new fields of work.

“Your Royal Highness, your visit to Seychelles and your presence at the university inauguration were such an honour for the government and the people of Seychelles,” said Mr Michel.

“It is a visit we will all treasure and it is now a part of our history. Thank you, once again, for coming and sharing this special moment with us.”
