8th Indian Ocean Island Games – August 5-14-Au Cap hosts torch as Games near |28 July 2011
The torch arrived in Au Cap on Tuesday after spending a day at Anse Royale.
It was the district’s member of National Assembly Marc Naiken and district administrator Murielle Marie who accepted the torch from Anse Royale’s representatives before passing it to former sprinter Marvis Confait and ex-basketballer Mona Barbé (silver medallist in 1998 in Reunion). They then launched the relay in their district.
The district’s chapel was the first official stop, and parish priest David Alcindor blessed the torch before it continued its tour of the district, allowing past and present athletes, as well as other individuals, including senior citizens, to take turns to carry it.
Former windsurfer Endra Fred (formerly Ha-tiff and silver medallist in 1993 in Seychelles, and gold medallist in 1998 in Reunion), ex-basketballer Mona Barbé (silver medallist in 1998 in Reunion), former athlete Evans Marie (bronze medallist in 2003 in Mauritius), handballer Thelma Sauzier, special athletes Andy Laporte and Peter Asba, ex-footballer Dave Fred, netball player Flossy Bonnelame, footballers Dereck Volcy and Edrick Balette, Travis Chang-Pen-Tive, Adelle Robert, Rosabelle Belise, Fatima Agathine and Pamela Marengo were among the torchbearers for Au Cap.
Former boxer Rival Payet (bronze medallist in 1985 in Mauritius, and twice gold medallist in 1990 in Madagascar and in 1993 in Seychelles) and Investment, Natural Resources and Industry Minister Peter Sinon carried the torch on the final lap.
The torch was then placed in the district’s administration office where it will remain until Saturday.
We publish today some of the photos taken by our photographer Louis Toussaint during Tuesday’s tour of the torch in Au Cap.
