“I feel proud to have been chosen as Seychelles’ flag bear at the Games,” Fanchette told Sports Nation.
The 13-year-old won three medals – a silver and two bronze – in the relays with Shrone Austin, Shannon Austin and Anisha Payet at the recent Indian Ocean Island Games here.
The silver medal came in the 4x200m freestyle, while the two bronze came in the 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley.
Fanchette also won four gold medals in the 50mk freestyle, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 50m butterfly at the 3rd Jeux de l’Espoir in Mauritius in April.
The other members of the team are swimmer Adam Viktora, athletes Jana Malbrook and Dayen Finesse, boxers Edward Robert and Dario Gabriel and badminton player Richie Course.
They are being accompanied by coaches Jerry Legras (boxing), Linda Jeanne (athletics), Annette Monthy (swimming) and Calix Francourt (badminton). Hebetty Alcindor heads the delegation.
Finesse has replaced Aaron Tirant in the two-member athletics squad because he was born in 1996 when according to the International Association of Athletics Federations he should have been born between 1994 and 1995 to compete in the youth category.
Approximately 1,000 young athletes aged between 13 and 18 years from 71 Commonwealth countries will be taking part in the Commonwealth Youth Games.
They will be competing in seven sporting events – athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, rugby sevens and swimming.
This is Seychelles’ second appearance in the Commonwealth Youth Games after making a debut in Pune, India in 2008.
