Boxing tournament to take place tonight at Anse Etoile |12 June 2015
Seychellois boxing enthusiasts will be able to enjoy a night of high quality action tonight when local boxers will compete at the Seychelles Boxing Federation’s first competition of the year.
It may not be held in the same prestige as the now historical Floyd Mayweather v/s Manny Pacquiao fight, but tonight’s event will be very important for the local boxers as they seek to impress their coaches in their bid to make the final team that will represent Seychelles at the 2015 Indian Ocean Island Games in Reunion.
The Anse Etoile district administration court will be venue for the big night, where boxing fans will be able to enjoy seven bouts which will for the first time in Seychelles’ boxing history feature a full female bout.
“It will be the very first time that the public will witness two female boxers in action here and we hope that will help to bring more girls to boxing,” said coach Jerry Legras.
Although boxing is generally more popular among men, coach Legras stated that the male boxers have treated the girls with a lot of respect and they get along very well in training.
The competition was organised at a rather short notice as the group of boxers were expected to be headed to Russia for a training camp, but due to some delays, they were forced to continue their preparations locally and therefore the Seychelles Boxing Federation decided to organise this competition to give them some much needed practice.
Coach Legras explained: “We will use this competition to evaluate the boxers and as they have all reached their peak right now, it should be an entertaining evening.”
He added that his only regret is that they could not get boxers from Praslin to take part in the competition as it was at a short notice.
“I wanted our boxers to compete against those from Praslin as they have some very good boxers as well,” he stated.
The competition will begin at 6.30pm and will see boxers rewarded with cash prizes as well as special prizes which include best boxer and best up-and-coming boxer.
The boxers taking part in the competition are Dario Gabriel, Alvin Botsoie, Alva Botsoie, Dave Cesar, Andrique Allisop, Stan Nicette, Michael Brioche, Lorenzo Bonne, Keddy Agnes, Ronny Legras, Keven Kilindo and Nigel Benoit. The two female boxers are Samia Fred and Stephanie Nicette.
