Weightlifters lower gold medal target to 20 |29 July 2015
With 30 gold medals won at the ninth Indian Ocean Island Games held here in 2011, the weightlifting team amassed over half of the country’s total gold medals of 57 which placed Seychelles second behind Reunion on 58 in the final medals standings.
Seychelles will tomorrow send 13 lifters to Reunion and expectations are high as always when it comes to weightlifting.
Coach William Dixie told Sports Nation that this year, they do not expect to win as many medals as they did in 2011 and he has set the target at 20 gold medals this time.
According to coach Dixie, Seychelles will not be vying for six gold medals and this is because we don’t have competitors in two female weight categories.
“If we are to perform to the same level as in 2011, our athletes will have to give all they have in Reunion,” said coach Dixie.
Only five female lifters will travel to Reunion this time and they are Ruby Malvina (58kg), Clementina Agricole (63kg), Brenda Lozaique (69kg), Janet Georges (75kg), and Rena Agricole (+75kg).
The eight male competitors are Daryl Riaze (56kg), Rick Confiance (62kg), Ian Rose (69kg), Romeo Simeon (77kg), Terrence Dixie (85), Steven Baccus (94kg), Jean-Pierre Estico (105kg), and Frank Accouche (+105kg).
