Karting: Super Final |20 November 2015
Champs crowned on perfect race day
Fifty drivers were involved in the 15 races during last Sunday’s season-ending Super Final on a perfect day for kart racing at the Champions Park raceway, Roche Caïman.
The winners were Nichol Bamboche (SF Novice), Shane Dodin (SF6 Cadet), Dharmil Shakida (SF5 Junior), Christophe Rassool (SF4), Liza Rene-Cosgrow (SF Ladies), Marc Delcy (SF3), Dave Rene (SF1)......
A minute’s silence was observed as four drivers had lost members of their families in the last week, while all the senior drivers raced with black arm bands to show their support.
In the SF Novice class, Nichol Bamboche stormed to victory, with young Cedric Ah-time finishing second and lady driver Samantha Labrosse taking third place. Lopez Anacoura finished a strong fourth with another lady driver Annette Lau Chan fifth, Nicholas Edmond sixth and Jaden Bastienne seventh. Bamboche secured the 2015 Junior championship, with Ah-Time the runner-up and Lopez third.
The SF6 Cadet class was going to be a close fight between Shane Dodin and Navin Ventkarslwarl. Although Ventkarslwarl got the win on the day, Dodin became the 2015 Cadet champion with Ventkarslwarl the runner-up and Louisa Lafortune third.
The SF5 Junior race was dominated by Joshua Samsoodin, but in the end Dharmil Shakida was declared the 2015 champion. Amadave Camille was the runner-up.
In the SF4 category, Keval Shakida was promoted to first place after the winner on the road, Christophe Rassool, had received a 10-second penalty for having accelerated before the start line.
Keval Shakida managed to tail Rassool towards the end to earn the 10 seconds to put him ahead in the results. Kris Gopal, who had started the day with an outside chance of winning the championship, was unlucky as he finished third, with lady driver Shireen Azemia taking fourth place and Andre Berlouis was fifth.
Rassool became the 2015 SF4 champion with Keval Shakida the runner-up and Gopal took third place.
In the SF Ladies class, Liza Rene-Cosgrow remains the best lady driver on the grid as she took the win with ease. Shireen Azemia, who fended off the challenge of Debra Mellon, was second. Mellon drove well but she could not get past Azemia. Samantha Labrosse did well to take fourth place with Annette Lau Chan finishing fifth overall. Louisa Lafortune did not start due to knee problems.
Rene-Cosgrow took the 2015 Ladies championship title ahead of runner-up Azemia and third was Mellon.
The SF3 race was as intense as ever, even in the absence of two good drivers.
Dane Decommarmond clawed his way from third to first place at the end, but he had to fight hard as Damien Bonnelamme, who had started second, spun out in the first corner, and from the tail, moved rapidly to finish second.
Marvin Sophie spun out in the S bend, gifting Neo Adrienne third place. Marc Delcy had an off day to finish fifth, while the luckless Peter Fred dropped out with a damaged bumper after two laps.
Marc Delcy was crowned the 2015 SF3 champion with both Damien Bonnelame and Peter Fred finishing the season on equal number of points.
With more wins than Fred, Bonnelame took the runner-up position and Fred settled for third place.
In the final race, the SF1 class, there was both drama and excitement.
Dave Rene having tailed Liza Rene-Cosgrow for almost the entire race, made a last gap dive into the hairpin bend to take the win on the very last lap. With no chance to fight back, Rene-Cosgrow took second place.
Roland Delcy took third position ahead of John Simon who had a lucky escape earlier when his kart’s battery exploded and caught fire during the race. Luckily for him it flew out narrowly missing his fuel tank, for a very lucky escape. John Simon celebrated as he beat his son Stephan Simon who finished fifth with tyre wear issues.
Dave Rene won the 2015 SF1 title with Rene-Cosgrow the runner -up, while Roland Delcy was lucky to beat John Simon by one point for third place.
National Sports Council director for NSC's director for sports management and development presented the prizes. The winners received medals. However the annual prize-giving ceremony for the season will be held during a gala on Saturday November 28 starting at 4pm at the Fishtail restaurant where drivers will be rewarded for the 2015 racing season. The 2015 best male and female kart drivers of the year will also be announced on the day.
Seychelles Karting Association chairperson Liza Rene-Cosgrow thanked all the drivers, officials, parents, the NSC, the media and sponsors for their support for both this event and for the whole 2015 season.
