Fisherman’s Cove and sister resorts in the region to mark Earth Hour |16 March 2016

Le Meridien Fisherman’s Cove hotel in Seychelles along with three other Starwood Resorts in the Indian Ocean will join millions around the world in turning off the lights for one hour on March 19 starting at 8.30 pm (local time) to illuminate a powerful message about environmental awareness and action.

The other three Starwood Resorts of the Indian Ocean taking part in this ‘Earth Hour’ event are the St Regis Mauritius Resort, Le Méridien Ile Maurice, and The Westin Turtle Bay Resorts & Spa Mauritius.

The theme of the 2016 Earth Hour celebration focuses on climate change following a successful United Nation's COP21 conference in Paris.

The annual global environmental awareness event was created and instituted by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2007 to emphasise the threat of global warming and the need to reduce carbon emissions.

As day moves to night, The St Regis Mauritius Resort will be turning off all lights in The Boathouse Bar & Grill and Welcome Pavilion from sunset to 11pm, alternatively using lanterns as ambient lighting. Chef Ravi Aukhaj, has created a “low mileage” Surf & Turf menu, using only local seafoods and meats for grilling, fresh vegetables and fruits for side dishes and desserts.

Aside from turning off the lights in all of the restaurants, Le Méridien Ile Maurice is preparing a Candlelight Barefoot Evening set on the beach. Bury your feet in the sand while feasting on an open flame barbeque!

At The Westin Turtle Bay Resort & Spa Mauritius, a guided procession will lead the guests to the Turtle Garden as the villa lights are being turned off.  There, awaits a Cocktail Hour with acoustic entertainment, sponsored by the Resort’s Green Team.  Afterwards, a special Earth Hour menu will be available at The Beach Grill. Live cooking stations will host a Mauritian culinary menu highlighting herbs grown from their own herb garden.

Le Méridien Fisherman’s Cove has chosen to spread its activities throughout the week prior to raise awareness, beginning Monday, March 14.  First – the hotel will ask their associates to take a digital pledge to #ChangeClimateChange.  Events also include hosting a candlelit ‘Earth Hour Cocktail’ on its pontoon and tree-planting event for both guests and associates.  On the Saturday itself, an UNLOCK Art photography exhibition will be on display featuring ‘My Earth Hour’ -- the associates’ perception of what Earth Hour means to them.  The welcome ritual will begin with a lighting ceremony.  Following, a ‘Glow In The Dark’ event will take place on the beach with candlelit entertainment and the traditional & energetic moutya dance.  For dinner, guests will be able to dine on a special à la carte and under the stars at Le Bourgeois Restaurant.

“It’s a privilege for the four Starwood Resorts in the Indian Ocean to support such a powerful movement with such a simple gesture,” said Damon N. Page, area general manager, Indian Ocean.

“Earth Hour reflects a philosophy we try to practice year-round; we all must do our part and together we can make a big difference. Climate change affects everyone and it also has an impact on the continued success of our business.”

Last year, nearly 600 Starwood properties around the world participated. In addition to conserving energy, many properties hosted events and activities that engaged associates and guests. Some projects and programming included themed menus designed to highlight local and organic foods and Earth Hour inspired cocktails; special performances, tailored concerts, and displays of traditional entertainment; and distinctive campaigns devised to support individual community initiatives and conservation efforts.
