Sacos National Inter-School Swimming Championship |02 April 2016

Three records broken as Independent School grabs six shields

This year, the honour of the best school in swimming has gone to Independent School as it racked up six out of the 10 shields on offer at the Sacos National Inter-School Swimming Championships finals held yesterday when three new records were also beaten.

International School’s wins came in the boys’ 7-9 years, boys’ 10-11 years, girls’ 12-13 years, boys’ 12-13 years, and boys’ 14-15 years categories.

Last year’s championship saw Independent School just edge out its rival, the International School, which has this year managed to win just two shields (girls’ 14-15 years and boys’ over 16 years).

Along with its overall success, Independent School also had two of its athletes go home as holders of new records achieved in the Roche Caïman national swimming pools.

First was Thierry Payet who managed to reduce the boys’ 7-9 years 25m butterfly record to a time of 17.93 seconds. The old best of 18.36 seconds belonged to Kyle Fred.

Then it was Therese Soukoup who established a new girls’ 12-13 years 50m backstroke record of 32.81 seconds, erasing her old time of 39.19 seconds set last year.

The third record of the day went to Pointe Larue primary school’s Tyler Fred whose time of 34.50 seconds is a new boys’ 12-13 years 50m backstroke record, erasing Shane Mangroo’s time of 35.09 seconds set in 2006.

At the end of the competition, Independent School claimed six shields, International School two, Plaisance primary school one (girls’ 10-11 years) and the School for Business Studies and Accounting (SBSA) one (girls’ over 16 years).
