89 young judokas in action in Elite judo club competition |31 May 2016

Eighty-nine young judokas from six local clubs and one from Reunion challenged each other in the international one-day judo competition for boys and girls under 14 years old.

The competition took place last Saturday at the Omnisports Gym, Roche Caïman and it was organised by the Elite Judo club of Port Glaud in collaboration with the Seychelles Judo Federation. It is the first competition organised by the club.

The young judokas battled each other for the gold, silver and bronze medals in different categories. The six local teams who took part are Grand Anse Praslin Judo Club, Alpha Judo Club, Moulinié Judo Club, Perseverance Judo Club, Etoile Judo Club and Elite Judo Club, while Dojo Huang Judo club is from St Denis, Reunion and they had delegation of seven male judokas along with three coaches and officials.

Elite Judo Club coach and former Seychelles judoka Francis Labrosse said he is very satisfied with the running of the competition “although there were a few little hick-ups” and he added that “it is very encouraging and we hope to have a much bigger competition next year with the participation of more international clubs. This competition was a great success.”

Coach Theo Pitaval of Dojo Huang also described the competition as “super” and “very well organised”.

“I have spoken to Francis (Labrosse) so that we could have an exchange for this type of competition in the future and I wish that the tournament continues and gets even bigger,” he said. 

The medals were presented to the young winners by the Minister for Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports Vincent Meriton, community development and sports principal secretary Denis Rose and Dojo Huang representative Patrick Dalgren.

The Reunion team comprised seven male fighters.
