Young athletes benefit from mental training sessions |18 August 2016

A group of young athletes from across various sports yesterday completed a two-day mental training workshop which will surely help to prepare them for future challenges with regard to sport.

The director for training and technical development within the National Sports Council (NSC), Bernard Denis, said this training will prepare our potential young athletes to better cope with the growing demand of high level sports in the future.

“Sometime the pressure when performing at high level can be too much for certain athletes and thus can affect their performance greatly. This is why we feel it is important for athletes to be strong mentally in order to better cope with such situations,” said Mr Denis.

The training was followed by some 25 young athletes although Mr Denis explained that he wanted much more people to be present.

“We contacted 14 sports federations in order to get athletes to attend, but only three federations responded,” said Mr Denis.

The various topics covered during the course are mental training, motivation, the dangers and consequences of doping in sports, healthy eating and goals setting.

Maurice Denys, Paul Nioze and Mauritian Archana Nair were the speakers.
